Construction Project Overview
Believing that all northern Michigan residents deserve the finest health care possible – in the convenience of their own region – McLaren Northern Michigan began a $158 million building project that includes adding a new wing to the hospital and renovating more than 58,000 square feet of existing space. The project started in the 2017 with site preparation and is expected to be completed in 2023 when the final existing hospital renovations are finished.
The hospital’s guiding principle -- to provide health care as we expect for our own family -- helped to guide our design decisions. The project’s goals were to:
- Increase patient privacy
- Decrease noise
- Enhance communications between the patient, family and care team
- Create a safe, healing environment
Every aspect of the design was based on research; studies show that safety, privacy, flow and wayfinding are key to an exceptional patient experience.
New Wing Highlights
Opened in August of 2021, this 182,000-square-foot addition named the “Offield Family Pavilion” features:
- 104 private patient rooms in an expanded Intensive Care Unit and new cardiovascular and orthopedic/surgical units
- 10 new state-of-the-art operating rooms equipped with 4K technology
- New sterilization processing department with the latest sterilization equipment
- Smart technology, creating one of the most advanced in-room experiences for patients and families
- Over 200 pieces of art from nearly 100 Michigan artists to add visual comfort for patients
- New Main Entrance and lobby featuring a conveniently located new hospital registration area and lab draw area
- Color- and letter-coded wayfinding, starting from the parking lot into the hospital

Current Renovation Phase
Nearly 60,000 square feet of existing hospital is being renovated and departments will be relocated for patient convenience and operational efficiencies. Expecting to be completed in 2023, the renovations include:
- New endoscopy suites
- Expanded preoperative unit, post anesthesia unit and ambulatory recovery area
- New inpatient lab and inpatient pharmacy
- New community education room
- Special patient hallways and elevators for private patient transportation
- An expansive hallway on the Concourse level to connect the new wing to the existing building which will include:
- New, consolidated Medical Imaging waiting room
- Centrally located coffee shop
- New Chapel and Chaplain’s office
- a gallery of philanthropy honoring past and current giving
Community Support
More than 1,500 individuals and organizations donated more than $39 million to the hospital’s expansion and renovation project. The new addition was named the Offield Family Pavilion after the lead donation from the Offield Family Foundation spearheaded by Harbor Springs residents and capital campaign co-chairs Jim and sujo Offield. The Offield family has had a long legacy, both of supporting and utilizing the hospital, dating back to its beginning.
“My grandfather was one of the hospital’s original founders and my father served on the hospital board for many years,” Jim Offield said. “Providing the best hospital services for this community is a way for our family to give back to an area that has given our family six generations of memories. Our family has utilized every service the hospital offers, from birth to death. My own life was saved there. With a history of providing exceptional health care for an exceptional community, our family is proud to be in partnership with McLaren.”
Another key donation was made by Martin and Lisa Sutter. With their generous support, McLaren Northern Michigan will name the north pavilion entrance in their honor.
“Northern Michigan is a magical place made even more special by the exceptional care offered at McLaren Northern Michigan,” Martin Sutter said. “Lisa and I have been supporters of the hospital since 2002. We strongly feel that the hospital is the most important entity to support in northern Michigan and that it provides first-rate health care. Those of us spending time here will undoubtedly need the hospital during our lives. Because Lisa and I have been beneficiaries of the superior care provided at McLaren Northern Michigan, we felt there has never been a better time for us to increase our giving to ensure this hospital continues to stay at the forefront of medicine.”
The Sutter’s gift will fund future equipment and technology for the McLaren Northern Michigan Petoskey Campus.
