Nursery

The nursery at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital provides care for mothers and their newborns.

The nursery at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital is under the medical direction of a Pediatric Hospitalist and is staffed 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week by nurses specially trained in the care of ill newborns and those who may develop complications and/or need resuscitation. State-of-the-art equipment promotes technically excellent care and supports the collegial efforts of the care team. This unit is supported by Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Lab & x-ray. A Social Worker and Care Coordinator are assigned specifically to the Women and Children’s Care Center for continuity of services.

The nursery is equipped to provide care to newborns with any of the following needs:
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Minor infections
  • Temperature regulation
  • Blood glucose regulation
  • Feeding difficulties

Newborns will be transferred when a higher level of care is needed. Children requiring transfer will be transported in vehicles uniquely equipped to support their special needs. Northern Michigan Regional Health System has partnerships with Munson Health in Traverse City, University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, and the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. All transfer arrangements are made with consideration of both patient needs and family preferences.
