What We Provide
Northern Michigan Regional Hospital Rehabilitation Services offers a comprehensive Lymphedema program to assist women and men who have continuous swelling in the arms and/or legs. When lymphatic tissues are damaged, body fluids build up, causing swelling or edema. This treatment program helps reduce/eliminate the swelling and works to prevent its return.
Who Can Benefit From Lymphedema Services
Though we primarily see post-mastectomy or lumpectomy patients, anyone with continuous swelling in the limbs, whether post-surgically or from another ailment, can benefit from this treatment.
Treatment Strategies
Following an initial assessment, treatment includes a special gentle massage to encourage the movement of fluid out of the arm or leg. A compression bandage is applied to keep the fluid from returning. An individualized exercise program is developed to rebuild strength in the affected limb. A home program and ongoing education is also provided.
