Outpatient Rehabilitation - Cognitive / Perceptual Skills

What We Provide

Northern Michigan Regional Hospital Rehabilitation Services department is dedicated to improving quality of life for all individuals with cognitive/perceptual impairments.. This is achieved by providing an evaluation, diagnosis, education, and treatment to all ages, infants through adults, with cognitive communication difficulties and/or perceptual communication difficulties.

Who Can Benefit From Cognitive / Perceptual Therapy

Cognitive/perceptual communication impairments affect attention and concentration, memory, sequencing routine tasks, problem solving skills, money management skills, use of socially appropriate language, reasoning and thought organization, and expression of emotions. Diagnosis types include traumatic brain injury, stroke (CVA), brain tumors, neurological diseases, post-neurological surgery, exposure to toxic substances, dementia, and chronic drug or alcohol abuse.

Treatment Strategies

Following an initial evaluation, the speech-language pathologist and patient (plus family members if appropriate) will develop a personalized treatment plan. Through focused therapy sessions, the speech-language pathologist will address the goals in the treatment plan in a variety of therapy activities. Some of these activities may include practice of money management skills, practice sequencing routine tasks, introduce a variety of simple and complex problems to solve, assist the patient to better utilize functional language needed for activities of daily living, or help the patient to construct a memory journal and encourage daily use. A home program may be recommended in conjunction with skilled therapy to encourage carryover of new skills to the home and the community.
