Inpatient Rehabilitation

Inpatient Rehabilitation would occur when a person is admitted to the Hospital. After the doctor evaluates the patient, they will determine is Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech-Language Pathology is needed.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is indicated if there is a decline in:

  • upper extremity strength; sensation; coordination
  • activities of daily living (feeding, grooming, dressing, bathing, toileting)
  • functional transfers (tub transfers, toilet transfers)
  • home management abilities (cooking, laundry, checkbook skills)
  • cognition (thinking skills)
  • lymphedema
  • or if there is a need for education in work simplification and/or energy conversion

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is indicated if there is decline in:

  • lower extremity strength, sensation
  • balance
  • ability to move in bed
  • ability to transfer (sit to stand, supine to sit, etc)
  • mobility (walking or propelling a wheelchair

or if there is:

  • recurrent falling
  • need for wheelchair assessment/fitting

Speech-Language Pathology

Speech-Language Pathology is indicated is there is decline in:
  • communication
  • verbal or written expression
  • verbal or written comprehension
  • speech intelligibility (dysarthia)
  • vocal quality (dysphonia)
  • memory, thinking skills or other cognitive abilities
  • swallowing (dysphagia)
