Chris W. Akins, MD
Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Chris W. Akins, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, where he also completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Akins was the Director of Robotic Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and Medical Director of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Aventura Medical Center in Aventura, Florida. Other health systems with which he has been affiliated include Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital.

J.D. Talbott, DO
Board Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, J.D. Talbott, DO, received his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to joining Northern Michigan Regional Health System, he served as both Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Associate Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Additionally, he served as Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery for the Michigan State University Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties. In 1990, Dr. Talbott founded the Lansing Heart & Lung Specialists, PC, where he served eight years as president, and co-founded the Cardiothoracic Surgical Program at Sparrow Hospital.

Kristine Bobish, DO
Kristine E. Bobish, DO, is a native of northern Michigan. After pursuing a
teaching career, Dr. Bobish decided to pursue her true love of medicine and
attended Michigan State University. She completed her residency at Henry
Ford-Horizon, BiCounty Hospital and her fellowship at Botsford Hospital. After
spending a year in the “big city” where she developed a Chest Pain Clinic as
well as a 12-lead EKG program for Macomb County EMS providers, Dr. Bobish has
returned to northern Michigan to provide cardiac services to the residents of
Gaylord and Grayling area. Dr. Bobish is board certified in Internal Medicine
and board eligible for Cardiology and a FACOI.

Louis Cannon, MD
Louis A. Cannon, MD, FACA, FCCP, FACC, FACP is a past Judah Volkman Scholar in
Residence, quadruple board certified, and has been named in the Top 100
CardioVascular Specialists in America. He has lectured worldwide and recently
performed potentially life-saving procedures in Singapore, as well as at the
Montreal Heart Institute on a 14 yr old girl. He is the previous Founding
President of the Michigan CardioVascular Institute in Saginaw, Michigan. In 2004
he accepted a position as the Program Director of the new Northern Michigan
Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute and serves as President of the Cardiac and
Vascular Research Center of Northern Michigan, bringing over two decades of
clinical trial experience using cutting edge technologies to treat
cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Cannon graduated from Wright State School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio with
an honorary Alpha Omega Alpha degree in 1984. He did his residency training in
Akron, Ohio, in a combined Internal/Emergency medicine program, becoming board
certified in both. He then completed an Interventional Cardiology fellowship at
the University of Cincinnati in 1991. Dr. Cannon is a recognized leader in
cardiovascular research and development. His current national (medical) research
focuses on drugs which reduce blockages from forming inside heart stents and the
use of ultrasound to open blockages that are totally occluded. He is excited
about the opportunities for his patients to gain access to the world’s best
technologies available for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Cannon
has been issued two U.S. medical patents in the field of cardiovascular
treatment and has been listed as one of “Americas Top Cardiologists” for years.
Dr. Cannon is board certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine,
Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, and is a Fellow of the
American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, the
American College of Physicians, the American College of Angiology, the American
Association of Emergency Physicians, and the Society for Cardiovascular
Angiography & Interventions. He has been inducted into Who’s Who in American
Medicine and has served on the board of governors of the Michigan Chapter of the
American College of Cardiology. He has hundreds of publications including
abstracts, manuscripts, textbook chapters and invited editorials.

Harry T. Colfer, MD
Harry T. Colfer, MD has been a practicing cardiologist in Petoskey, Michigan
since 1983. He has been consistently voted "Most Admired by his Peers" since
1996. In 2008, Dr. Colfer was named a "Top Doc" by Traverse Magazine.
Initially in partnership in the Burns Clinic, and now in private practice as
Michigan Heart and Vascular, Dr. Colfer’s philosophy is to treat each patient in
a highly individualized manner and integrate the latest technological
advancements into our services. He has special expertise in interventional
cardiology (angioplasty, coronary stents, etc.), and in management of coronary
heart disease and congestive heart failure.
Dr. Colfer went to medical school at the University of Cincinnati and graduated
in 1976. He completed his postgraduate training at the University of Michigan
followed by a fellowship in cardiology. Dr. Colfer joined the faculty at the
University of Michigan in 1981, and with Dr. Joseph Walton, the director of the
Catheterization Laboratory, started the interventional Cardiology Program there
in 1980. After joining the medical staff at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital,
Dr. Colfer started the cardiac rehabilitation program, as well as the clinical
research program.
Though Dr. Colfer’s primary professional activity is clinical cardiology, he has
an interest in clinical research and once was the Medical Director of the Nisus
Research Department at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital.
Dr. Colfer is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and
is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. |

David C. M. Corteville, MD
David Corteville, MD, grew up in Michigan and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco. After working for a year as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente in San Rafael, California, he returned to the University of Michigan for his cardiology training. Dr. Corteville worked with national leaders in echocardiography, nuclear medicine, and vascular imaging. He has extensive experience in 3D and transesophageal echocardiography. He also has experience working in a transplant center managing patients with advanced heart failure. His research focus while at the University of Michigan was on the management of patients with heart attack, laboratory tests to diagnose heart failure, and the impact of stroke in patients with aortic dissection.
Dr. Corteville is board certified in internal medicine and vascular ultrasound for the diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease. He is board eligible in nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and general cardiology.
In addition to general cardiology, Dr. Corteville has an interest in managing patients with advanced heart failure, as well as medical management of peripheral vascular disease and aortic and mitral valve disease. He also has an interest in diet and exercise for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Corteville will be part of the research team and actively involved in state-of-the-art imaging for the treatment of structural heart disease at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. |

Gerald Gadowski, DO
Gerald A. Gadowski, DO was born in Highland Park, Michigan, to Dr. Raymond
Gadowski, a physician, and Virginia Buszek, a pharmacist. He is the youngest of
three boys, all of whom are now cardiologists. He was raised in Franklin,
Michigan and graduated from W.E. Groves High School. He received his
undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. Dr. Gadowski attended
Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, became board-certified in internal
medicine, and practiced in the Detroit area for three years. He then did a
cardiology fellowship and was Chief Fellow at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal
Oak. He was in private practice for 17 years in suburban Detroit and was
Director of Cardiology at Oakland St. Johns Hospital in Madison Heights.
Since moving to northern Michigan in 2001, Dr. Gadowski has been in group
practice with Michigan Heart & Vascular Specialists. He is board certified in
cardiology and nuclear medicine cardiology. In his spare time, Dr. Gadowski
enjoys living on Crooked Lake with his wife, Sharon, and two sons, Zachary and
Nicholas. His many past times include fishing, skiing, ham radio and being a
“hockey dad”. Dr. Gadowski sees patients in Cheboygan and once a month in Rogers
City.

Peter Levanovich, MD
Dr. Levanovich graduated from the University of Vermont. He completed his
residency and fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Medical College of
Wisconsin, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Dr. Levanovich is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease by the American
Board of Internal Medicine. He is a cardiac electrophysiologist who has
extensive experience with all pacemakers, defibrillators, and related devices.
Dr. Levanovich has special interest in the use of ablation in cardiac
arrhythmias. He also holds a pacemaker clinic in Gaylord.

Patrick Maloney, MD
Dr. Maloney received his medical degree form the University of Washington. He is
board certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. His
interests include 2-D Echo – Doppler, Arteriography, preventive cardiology, and
cardiac rehabilitation. |

William Meengs, MD
William L. Meengs, MD, FACC, FSCAI has been a practicing cardiologist in
Petoskey since 1975. He is considered by many to be an important pioneer in the
treatment of cardiovascular disease in Northern Michigan. Dr. Meengs has held
many leadership positions within the medical community, including Chairman of
the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Burns Clinic Medical Center,
P.C. (1985-89); Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Northern Michigan
Hospital (1992-2000); Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Northern
Michigan Hospital (1999-2005); and President of Petoskey Cardiology (1999-2004).
Dr. Meengs graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1968. He
completed his residency training in Internal Medicine in 1973 and his fellowship
in Interventional Cardiology in 1975 at University Hospital in Ann Arbor. He is
board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, and
Nuclear Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Focusing foremost on his private practice, Dr. Meengs sees patients in Rogers
City, and Petoskey. In addition, he has been actively involved for over three
decades in cardiovascular research and has numerous published articles,
abstracts, grants, and presentations to his credit. His special interests
include research in coagulation, coronary intervention, pacing, and general
cardiac evaluation.

Dalton Miranda, MD
Dalton J. Miranda, MD attended medical school at the Universidade Federal de
Minas Gerais. His fellowship was completed at Jackson Memorial
Hospital/University of Miami and his residency was completed at Jackson Memorial
Hospital.

Naomi Overton, MD
Dr. Overton comes to northern Michigan by way of Aspirus Wausau Hospital in
Wisconsin. She conducted her internship, residency and fellowship at Lady Davis
Carmel Medical Center in Israel. Dr. Overton received additional fellowship
training at Rush University Medical Center, specializing in Electrophysiology.
She has served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of
Wisconsin. |

Jason M. Ricci, MD
Jason M. Ricci, MD received his medical degree from Wayne State University
School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his internal medicine
residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Cardiology and Interventional
Cardiology fellowships at William Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak, Michigan, and
most recently, a VIVA Endovascular Fellowship at El Camino Hospital in Mountain
View, California.
Dr. Ricci is board certified in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology,
Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, Nuclear Cardiology, and Internal Medicine.
He is board eligible in Vascular and Endovascular Medicine.
In addition to comprehensive cardiac care, Dr. Ricci’s interests include carotid
stenting, endovascular limb salvage therapies, and aortic stent grafting for
abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. He is actively involved in clinical
research and has recently initiated a clinical trial evaluating a novel
technique to reduce the risk of stroke with carotid stenting in symptomatic
lesions. Northern Michigan Regional Hospital is a participating center and is
actively recruiting patients. |

Duane Schuil, MD, PhD
Duane W. Schuil, MD, Ph.D., FACC, FSCAI has been a practicing cardiologist in
Petoskey since 1989. Dr. Schuil is the President of Michigan Heart & Vascular
Specialists and has held a number of professional leadership positions including
Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, NMH (1991); Chief, Division of
Medicine, NMH (1992-94); and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, NMH
(2000-present). Dr. Schuil also served as chairman of the Institutional Review
Board of Northern Michigan Hospital, overseeing all research at the institution,
from 1990 until 1995 (member through 2001). Currently, Dr. Schuil serves as the
co-chair of the Interdisciplinary Endovascular Department at Northern Michigan
Regional Hospital. Dr. Schuil graduated from Calvin College in 1976. He attended
the Medical University of South Carolina and graduated in 1983 with two degrees:
an MD and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. He completed his residency and fellowship in
cardiology at UCLA-San Fernando Valley Medical Program in 1989. Dr. Schuil is
board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, with special certification in
Interventional Cardiology, by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Schuil has maintained a special interest in catheter-based treatment of
multivessel coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction management, and
management of cardiogenic shock. Dr. Schuil’s original research interest
culminated in a doctorate in pharmacology, with a special emphasis on myocardial
cell membrane and its transport properties. Dr. Schuil’s current research
interests include transcatheter cardiac interventional device development. In
addition, Dr. Schuil’s practice has expanded into peripheral vascular disease
diagnosis and management, including various catheter based interventional
strategies.

Andrew H. Teklinski, MD
Andrew H. Teklinski, MD believes that a successful approach to cardiac care
involves teamwork between doctor and patient. He works closely with each patient
to assess their needs and develop their personal cardiac profile. In this way,
doctor and patient become a team with a common goal to fight heart disease and
improve heart health. Dr. Teklinski vows to “always put my patient’s needs and
welfare as my highest priority.” Dr. Teklinski is trained in invasive and
clinical cardiology including cardiac catheterization, nuclear cardiology,
echocardiography, placement of pacemakers, biventricular pacemakers, and
implantable cardioverter defibrillators. He is active in research and has
published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to his
clinical roles, Dr. Teklinski has had a distinguished career as a teacher and a
clinical investigator. Dr. Teklinski is also able to read and write fluently in
Polish.
Dr. Teklinski completed his cardiovascular fellowship training at St. John's
Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. Prior to that, he was an internist for
nearly 10 years in various positions. He served in the U.S. Army, with staff
positions at Ireland Army Hospital, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Wright-Patterson
Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. After leaving the active duty, he was in private
practice in Pensacola, Florida, and later, Edina, Minnesota. He remains in the
inactive Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His academic appointments include assistant clinical professor of medicine at
Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, and assistant professor of medicine,
Uniformed Service University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD. Dr. Teklinski
received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University and
completed his internship and residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in
Honolulu, Hawaii. |

Harold Willens, MD
Harold J. Willens, MD, FACC has been a practicing cardiologist since 1980. He
served as Clinical Coordinator of Nuclear Cardiology and Stress Testing
(1980-82); Director of Heart Station (1983-86); and Supervisor of the
Echocardiography Laboratory (1984-86) at Sinai Hospital in Detroit before
joining Petoskey Cardiology, P.C. in 1986. Since coming to Northern Michigan,
Dr. Willens has served in a number of capacities at both the Burns Clinic and
Northern Michigan Hospital.
Dr. Willens graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit
in 1975. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine in 1978 at
Sinai Hospital of Detroit, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. In
1980 he completed his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases, also at Sinai
Hospital of Detroit. Board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Dr. Willens is
an invasive cardiologist with special interests in cardiac diagnostics,
including echocardiography and nuclear medicine. His clinical interests include
congestive heart failure and valvular heart disease. Dr. Willens has been
involved as co-investigator and principal investigator in multiple multi-center
clinical trials. In addition to the practice in Petoskey, Dr. Willens sees
patients in Gaylord.
